Introduction
OnePile is an organization that is working on an online bookcrossing platform. With the online bookcrossing platform they have built, they would like to extend their business and attract more users to expand their fan base.
Research
Our research found that OnePile has a sustainable user base, but they are mainly die-hard readers, and the bookcrossing machines are sometimes insufficient for different locations.
To expand their user base, we identified potential new user groups, particularly teenagers with reading habits and a tendency for group reading, which can enhance their motivation.
Additionally, our study showed that people enjoy reading in a place with some ambient noise and availability of snacks and drinks, allowing them to read for longer periods. This suggests opportunities to create a better reading atmosphere to strengthen the bond between different levels of readers and users.
Reader needs
Place for book-crossing
OnePile needed more spots to run their book-crossing system since not all of the machines spots are convenient for the readers.
Group reading atmosphere
Current teenagers are willing to build a group reading atmosphere to increase their interest in reading and sustain their reading behavior.
Comfy reading place
Most readers’ ideal reading place includes having drinks while reading and some natural background noise to create a better environment.
Design concept
Based on our research, we have created a 3-step process for people to engage with bookcrossing on the OnePile platform and add on two new systems into the apps:
Point system
We’ve added a points system to OnePile to strengthen fan engagement and make the platform more attractive for potential partners to host bookcrossing machines. This not only creates more bookcrossing spots, but also helps partners attract more customers to their locations.
Online forum
Based on our findings about the benefits of group reading, we believe creating a platform for people to share their thoughts and comments on reading or books will enhance the reading atmosphere and attract more newcomers to join the bookcrossing and reading activities, becoming users of the OnePile platform.
